Bill Nichols’ Prescription:
Comics 10ccs of Mitch O’Connell

What inspires you to create and keeps you going?

Those pesky bills that keep coming in the mail. And it appears I was born with genes that won’t let me stop drawing.

Do you have a set routine?

When I’m awake, I’m working.

What kind of output do you try to achieve?

Art that’s better than anyone else’s, and more of it.

What inspires you WHEN you create? Music? Noise? Silence?

Answering questionnaires.

Who was the first comic book creator that influenced you to pursue this?

All the artists who had an individual style in the 70s, Wrightson, Adams, Smith, Kaluta, Chaykin and on and on and on!

When did you realize you could follow this path yourself?

I have a limited range of talents. Drawing and…

I guess it’s just drawing.

That made the choice pretty simple.

What do you find to be a challenge in creating?

Lack of skill and the ability to see that lack of skill.

If only I could be blissfully ignorant, I would get alot more done!

What else do you have to learn?

Everything.

What keeps you motivated to get better?

You only get one go-around, might as well do the best possible.

Can you turn your brain (creativity) off (and on)?

No. Sometimes the best ideas appear when you’re not trying, and often the worst ideas come when you’re trying very, very hard.

Booster Shots

What advice do you have for aspiring creators?

Set the world afire with your visions!

Do you ever worry about running out of ideas?

No. I only worry about trying to get 1/100th of them on paper.

How do you handle the slow times?

‘Slow-times’ ? What are those?

When I’m not being paid to draw something, I always have my own endless personal projects. Plus I also have that ‘real life’ thing going on which requires a bit of attention now and then.

How do you feel about the industry?

I maybe buy one new comic every 10 years. I spend most of my comic time enjoying and discovering things 70s and before.

And do you have a website you would want to direct folks to?

You know it!
